06/08/08 - Sentiment must not play part in decision
RE: THE newly-federated Boston Grammar Schools.
The primary consideration must be where and how the young people of Boston can receive the best possible education in the forthcoming years.
There are many factors involved in reaching a decision. These include location, and there are arguments for and against both the existing Grammar/High School sites – where are there better or more easily-adapted facilities, the cost of converting to co-education and many other considerations, not least among which is safeguarding and celebrating Boston's heritage so that, should the existing Grammar School not be the selected site, an appropriate educational use for the 'Old School' is found.
I write this with some 38 years' involvement with one or other of the schools – as a pupil at the High School, as a teacher at the Grammar School and the High School, as a parent of children at both schools and currently as a council representative on the Grammar School Foundation governing body.
A reasoned and unsentimental decision must be reached that will be right for the future of Boston and its people.
