Tuesday, 2.20pm - WATER great idea!
Women wanting to use Pilgrim Hospital's birthing pool can now do so for free.

The water birthing pool allows women to labour or even give birth in water.

After being set up in November 2006, there were only two waterbirths that year, and in 2007 there were only seven waterbirths and a further four women laboured in the pool but gave birth outside of it.

But each woman who used it has previously been charged £25 – to cover the cost of a disposable liner for the pool which has to replaced for each use.

The hospital has now decided to make the liners available for free in an effort to encourage more women to use the pool.

Labour ward manager at Pilgrim Janet Barker said: "Using the pool reduces stress, pain and the need for drugs. It's a gentle birth experience for mother and baby."
