Thursday, 1pm - SHOULD Boston Borough Council have debt collectors knocking on people's doors?
That may well be the question you ask yourself after finding out that the authority currently has £2,010,341 in council tax arrears from the period 2007-08 to pre 2002-03.
Only last week, The Standard reported the borough council was facing a £6
52,000 black hole by next April.
And to recoup some funds, cabinet members gave the go-ahead to a recovery plan, which estimates suggest will save about £350,000.
Money-saving proposals included council restructuring, cutting the
opening hours of the Guildhall and Haven, closing car parks, selling land, and closing the Assembly Rooms pending its sale. Boston Borough Council states it is actively trying to pursue the arrears - and in the period May to June of this year managed to recover £60,595.
Coun Richard Lenton, cabinet member for finance, said: "The council pays out to the other billing authorities monthly or twice a year and then collects that money back through the year.
"Looking at the figures for the previous years these are arrears owed to the public purse and we are actively pursuing those debts."
Between May to June the council recovered £49,550 in council tax debt for the period 2007-08
