Tuesday, 3.45pm - Wrangle goalkeeper Jim Bedford faced three penalties in one match of football, but his side still progressed in the Sports Cup. This was one of the many memorable matches in the Saturday Football league programme...
Eleys Newton Fallowell Sports Cup
WRANGLE United had to make six changes from the previous week when they travelled to play Skegness Town Reserves... and in a nine-goal encounter – which saw keeper Jim Bedford save two penalties – they edged through.
The visitors suffered an early setback when Skegness were awarded a spot kick.
Although Bedford saved the first attempt he was powerless to prevent the rebound being knocked home.
Wrangle fought back and were soon level when Jamie Elston latched onto Wayne Keal's through ball before beating the advancing keeper.
Wrangle then edged in front when Tim Bell scored – and this was quickly followed by a Perrie Dale strike to put the visitors 3-1 ahead.
Young Lewis Emmanuel added a fourth on his Premier debut before Skegness reduced the arrears with another penalty, making the half time score 4-2.
In the second minute of the second half the home side were awarded a third penalty – but Bedford's earlier practice paid dividends and he made a fine save.
Perrie Dale looked to have put the game well beyond Town's reach with a fifth goal, but two goals in the final five minutes set up a tense finish.
However, Wrangle held out to book their place in the next round.
Skegness went close with goals from John Jeffrey (two), Troy Lonslow and David Duckham.
YOU would have probably expected Boston Town Old Boys' striker Micky Nuttell to celebrate his 40th birthday with a goal when his side played hosts to Tydd St Mary – but even though the home side won 4-1 the birthday boy didn't make the scoresheet.
However, Ian Bircumshaw stole the limelight with all four of his side's goals. Ashley Godfrey netted for Tydd.
CONINGSBY breezed through to the next round with a comfortable 8-1 away win at Eastville, Midville & New Leake.
Robin Holderness grabbed a hat-trick while the other goals came from Pete Dickinson, Ben Brown, Jonathan Eadsforth, Tom Dickinson and Jordan Moore.
Eastville's Michael Head was also on target.
SWINESHEAD did just enough to book their place in the next round as they hosted Mareham United.
An own goal and strikes from Nathan Stainfield and Richard Stukins saw Institute wrap up the win in the first half.
A DEPLETED Freiston side still proved too strong for visiting Westside Rangers.
Dean Seiner (two), Nathan Padley (two), Peter Lovelace, Aston Chase netted in a 6-1 victory.
FRISKNEY struggled to contain the energies of a young Holbeach St Marks side and they were dumped out of the competiton following a 4-0 defeat.
Tom Brooks struck two goals for St Marks while Lewis Forman and Martin Gordon completed the scoring.
SKEGNESS Working Men's Club always had a mountain to climb when they took to the field with only nine men against First Division side Old Doningtonians.
Chris Wing helped himself to five of his side's goals in a 12-0 victory, while the tally was completed with further strikes from Liam Pitts (two), Martin Fox, Tom Wilkerson, Adam Slaughter and Wayne Foster.
WAINFLEET United hit double figures when they made the journey to Carrington to take on Park United.
Rob Jackson (three), Lee Johnson, Royston Wilkinson, Wes Sutton (two), Michael Parnham (two), and Scott Drury completed the scoring.
OLD Leake are through to the next round following a comfortable 4-0 home win against Pointon.
Rob Staples hit two of the Leake goals while Luke Stocks and Scott MacKay made sure of victory.
TWO goals from Thomas Rabiega were enough to give Spalding Town victory at Park Road Old Boys, although it needed extra time to decide the outcome.
Jack Smith grabbed Park Road's goal in a 2-1 defeat.
A SINGLE Jimmy Britton goal ensured Wyberton were triumphant over Kirton Town.
HOLBEACH Bank went mighty close to springing a shock result when they entertained Spilsby Town.
Cymon Lambe opened the scoring for Division One side before Spilsby levelled to take the tie into extra time.
In extra time Mark Casey scored to put the Bank 2-1 ahead, before a goal 15 seconds from time meant the result was to go down to penalties.
The Premier side proved the deadlier from the spot-kicks and they sneaked through 4-2.
Spilsby's normal-time goals came from Pete Sampson and Lathen Tuplin.
SPALDING Harriers, from Division Two, saw off the challenge of first division visitors Fishtoft thanks to two goals from striker Steve Carn in a 2-1 victory.
SUTTERTON may be awarded a walk over following Billinghay Athletic's decision to pull out of their tie because of a lack of available players.
Cropleys Suzuki Division One
SWINESHEAD Institute Reserves grabbed a late winner at Coningsby Reserves to retain their place at the top of the table.
Carl Wilson's two goals looked to have earned Coningsby a share of the points in an evenly contested encounter before Swineshead dealt the late body blow to their opponents.
Swineshead's match winners were Alex Kirkham, Harry Houghton and an own goal.
Cropleys Suzuki Division Three
SPALDING Town Reserves remain in touch with the leaders following a 4-1 home win against Woodhall Spa United Reserves.
Aiden Doherty hit two of the Town goals while Chris Page and Mark Henderson also got on the scoresheet
FISHTOFT Reserves' leading scorer Simon Hyland grabbed another two goals in his side's
3-2 home win against Kirton Town Reserves.
Hyland's strikes came from the penalty spot and a free-kick, which took a slight deflection.
John McGarel was also on target for the league leaders.
TWO scheduled games failed to take place in the division – Billinghay Athletic Reserves versus Spalding Harriers Reserves and Pointon Reserves versus Freiston Reserves.
Billinghay opted to pull out of their first team's Sports Cup tie after several players were found to be away for the weekend on a stag do – and this forced the reserve team match to be cancelled also, owing to league rules not allowing first team games to be pulled before the second-string fixture.
In the other match, Freiston Reserves were unable to go ahead with their game at Pointon because of a serious lack of available players.
It is expected that Spalding Harriers Reserves and Pointon Reserves will be awarded the three points at December's management meeting.
Friendly
SPORTSMAN took part in their second successive friendly during a period of league inactivity, when they played Old Doningtonians Reserves.
Both sides provided a
closely-fought encounter in a 1-1 draw, with Nicky De Vries being on target for Sportsman.
