Taylor blasts kick-off delay... Watts to stay

Wednnesday, 9.15am - PILGRIMS boss Tommy Taylor has described the UniBond Premier League's decision to postpone Boston United's opening game of the season as 'absolutely ridiculous'.
The former West Ham FA Cup winner fears this will leave his squad playing catch-up from day one and giving their rivals a comfortable head start.

"You don't want to know what I really think about it," said Taylor.
"But what I will say is that it's absolutely ridiculous... absolutely ridiculous."

League officials have ordered United to change the date of their match at Nantwich from August 16 to March 24 next year... because the hosts claim their pitch will not be ready in time for the big kick off.

UniBond chiefs made the decision not to switch the contest to York Street because they claimed it would give Boston an 'unfair advantage' to begin their season with three home contests.

But Taylor reckons that beginning the season on August 20 against an Ossett Town side who will already have 90 minutes of competitive action behind them will, instead, leave his side at a disadvantage.

"It won't help us at all – I said that straight away," Taylor continued.
"Everybody else will have started before us and we're being expected to get on with it after all the others have.

"By the time we play our first game a lot of other teams will have three points on the board and if we draw our first game we'll be looking up the table straight away.

"Four points would be a decent start to a season but it probably wouldn't be good enough for us to be in the top six which is where we want to be from the start."

Aiming to get his players as match-ready as he can in time for the club's delayed kick off, Taylor is currently looking for a worthy opponent for his team to play on the Thursday before the season begins.

He added: "I want to give the boys a good workout then, maybe, give them the Saturday off to get fresh for the Wednesday game.

"At least that gives me the opportunity to go and watch Ossett a few days before we play them."

Taylor also added that his injured players will again be used as scouts this season, saying 'if they aren't playing they've got to be doing something'.

United have denied that summer signing Paul Watts has quit the club.

Watts – who was a member of the Dr Martens-winning side as a teenager – was absent from the squad which travelled to Histon on Sunday, sparking rumours he has walked out.

However, Taylor said: "Paul's part of my plans and he's impressed me.

"He's just been busy at work and found it hard to get to training so I told him to take a bit of time out. He's still with the club."
